Getting Married in Trapani
— Where Sicily Whispers
A complete guide to western Sicily’s most romantic corner, and why Baglio Sorìa might just be your perfect venue

If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram dreaming of a wedding that feels cinematic, golden, and deeply real — you might have already found your answer without knowing it yet: western Sicily.
Most couples planning a destination wedding in Italy go to Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast. And yes, those places are extraordinary. But western Sicily? It operates on a completely different level. It’s wilder, more emotional, less crowded — and frankly, more beautiful in ways that are harder to put into words and easier to feel in person.
In this article, I’m going to take you on a little journey. We’ll start by exploring the Trapani area, one of the most fascinating corners of Sicily, and then zoom in on a venue that genuinely took my breath away the first time I visited: Baglio Sorìa Resort & Wine Experience.
Ready? Let’s go.
The Region
Trapani: The Secret Heart of Western Sicily
Trapani sits at the very tip of Sicily’s northwestern coast, jutting into the Mediterranean like a narrow sickle of land pointing toward Africa and Spain. For centuries, this strategic position made it one of the island’s most important ports. Today, it’s one of those rare places in Italy that hasn’t been entirely consumed by mass tourism — and that’s precisely what makes it so special for couples seeking authenticity.
The province of Trapani encompasses a stretch of landscapes so varied it can feel almost surreal. Within a 30-minute drive you can go from crystalline turquoise water to windmill-dotted salt pans, from ancient Greek temples to medieval hilltop villages draped in clouds.
This is a place where the light changes everything. At sunset, the salt pans of Trapani turn a hundred shades of pink and amber — flamingos included.
The Salt Pans — Nature’s Own Cathedral
One of the most iconic sights in all of Sicily are the Saline di Trapani e Paceco — a protected natural reserve of ancient salt pans stretching between Trapani and Marsala. Windmills stand quietly against the sky. Pink flamingos and white storks wade through shallow rose-tinted waters. It’s the kind of landscape that makes photographers weep with joy. For wedding photos, there is simply no equivalent in Italy.

Erice — The Medieval Village in the Clouds
Perched atop Monte San Giuliano at nearly 750 meters above sea level, Erice is a stone-paved medieval village that seems to float above the world. On clear days, you can see the Egadi Islands, the salt pans, and on particularly fortunate days, even the distant coast of Tunisia. The town has a sacred, almost mystical quality — it was dedicated to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, in antiquity. Need I say more for a wedding destination?

The Egadi Islands
Just off the coast lie the Egadi Islands — Favignana, Levanzo, and Marettimo — three jewels of clear water and wild nature. These are perfect for a honeymoon extension, a pre-wedding boat day, or simply knowing that your venue will frame their silhouette on the horizon.

Segesta and Ancient History
For couples who love culture and grandeur, the Temple of Segesta — one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world — stands solitary on a hilltop just outside Trapani. It’s a humbling reminder that this land has been the setting for human stories for thousands of years. Yours would simply be the newest.

Climate
300+ sunny days a year. Spring and autumn are perfect — warm but never overwhelming.
Accessibility
Palermo airport is ~90 minutes away. Trapani also has its own small airport with seasonal connections.
Best Season
May–June and September–October offer ideal temperatures and stunning harvest light.
Now let’s talk about the venue I want to tell you about today. Because if Trapani is a hidden treasure, Baglio Sorìa is the jewel inside it.

What Makes It Special
Baglio Sorìa is part of the Firriato wine estate — one of the most celebrated wine producers in western Sicily. The property traces its roots to the 16th–17th century, when a baglio was the social and working heart of a rural Sicilian community: a fortified farmstead where the entire life of the countryside unfolded. Today, after a masterful restoration that preserved every stone and courtyard, it has become one of the most distinctive luxury wine resorts in Italy.
The setting is nothing short of extraordinary. The estate sits on a hillside on the slopes of Mount Erice, overlooking vineyards and olive groves that stretch toward the sea. On the clearest days — and in Trapani, there are many — you can see the entire western Sicilian coastline from Marsala to the Egadi Islands, with Favignana and Levanzo in the foreground and the wild island of Marettimo in the distance.
And below the estate? The pink and amber salt pans, a nature reserve that is home to flamingos, storks, and wild horses. It’s one of the most surreal and romantic backdrops in all of Europe.

The Ceremony & Reception Spaces
- The Panoramic TerraceThe estate’s crown jewel. An open terrace with sweeping views over the Trapani salt pans and the Egadi Islands — perfect for symbolic ceremonies, welcome drinks, and those golden-hour moments that end up framed on walls for decades. With the sea stretching to the horizon, every single photograph looks like a painting.
- The Historic CourtyardAn intimate and elegant courtyard at the heart of the 17th-century building — ideal for evening ceremonies and receptions under a starlit Sicilian sky. Soft lighting, ancient stone walls, and the scent of the surrounding countryside create an atmosphere that feels both romantic and deeply rooted in history.
- The Restaurant & Indoor SpacesFor couples who prefer an indoor setting, or simply want a sophisticated backup plan, the estate’s restaurant offers refined elegance without compromise. Chef Andrea Macca crafts a menu that marries Sicilian farming and fishing traditions with contemporary artistry — using zero-mile ingredients from the estate and the local fishermen’s catch.
- The Sky LoungePositioned at the highest point of the estate, the Sky Lounge captures a 360° panorama that takes in the city of Trapani, the salt pans, the Stagnone lagoon with the island of Mozia, Marsala, and on clear days, practically all of western Sicily. There is no better spot for an aperitivo at sunset.

The Food & Wine Experience
Being part of the Firriato estate means that every glass poured at your wedding is a Sicilian wine of exceptional quality. The winery has decades of expertise and produces wines that have been recognized internationally — bold reds from the estate’s Nero d’Avola grapes, crisp whites, and elegant rosés. As part of the wedding experience, couples can arrange private tastings and tours of the cellar for their guests — a truly unique touch that no other venue in Tuscany or Amalfi can offer in quite the same way.
The food, meanwhile, is a love letter to Sicilian tradition. Think: freshly caught fish from the Trapanese coast, local buffalo ricotta, hand-rolled pasta, wild capers from Pantelleria, and pistachios from Bronte. Everything prepared with care, plated with elegance, and paired perfectly with the estate’s wines.

Accommodation on the Estate
One of the details I always look for in a venue — and that truly makes a difference — is whether guests can stay on site. At Baglio Sorìa, the answer is a beautiful yes. The estate has 16 elegantly furnished rooms, including Soria Suites, an Erice Suite, and Junior Suites, each blending Sicilian tradition with contemporary comfort. Your wedding party stays together, immersed in the same atmosphere from rehearsal dinner to farewell breakfast. No logistics nightmares, no taxis at midnight — just togetherness.
Everything You Need to Know Before You Book
Best Time of Year
For a wedding at Baglio Sorìa, I always recommend May, June, September, or October. Spring brings wildflowers and emerald vineyards; early autumn transforms the estate with the harvest, adding an almost theatrical richness to the landscape. July and August are beautiful but hot — though the breeze from the Egadi Islands keeps the terrace surprisingly comfortable in the evenings.
Ceremony Types
The venue welcomes civil ceremonies, symbolic ceremonies, and vow renewals. For legal civil ceremonies in Italy, you’ll need to prepare some documentation in advance — passports, birth certificates, and a certificate of no impediment (Nulla Osta). Symbolic ceremonies are simpler and avoid the Italian legal bureaucracy entirely. Either way, the wedding team will guide you through every step.
Getting There
The nearest major airports are Palermo (PMO), about 90 minutes away, and Catania (CTA) for those connecting from the east. Trapani also has a smaller airport, Birgi, with seasonal European connections. From Palermo, guests can rent cars or arrange transfers — and many couples use the journey as an excuse to stop at Segesta or Scopello along the way.
A Note on Capacity
Baglio Sorìa can accommodate up to 500 guests on the panoramic outdoor terraces — making it suitable for large celebrations as much as intimate gatherings. For small weddings and elopements, the courtyard and restaurant spaces create an incredibly cosy and personal atmosphere. All 16 rooms must be booked for a minimum of one night when hosting a wedding on the estate.
